Exhibition design: an immersive route of glowing columns and lines of light

Temporary exhibitions for luxury houses

Exhibition design for luxury houses: planning, building and installing your exhibition

You choose the pieces and the story; we design the space, the lighting and the display cases with you, then install the exhibition in the chosen venue.

Exhibition design means shaping the space of an exhibition: the visitor route, the presentation of objects, the display cases, the lighting and the signage. Prodbox, an event production company based in Paris, produces temporary exhibitions for luxury houses, from the design of the space to the get-out, with a team whose experience in shows and events goes back to 1994.

The visitor route, from the entrance to the last display case

Your visitors move at their own pace. With the scenographer, we draw the order of the rooms, the stopping points and the pauses, so the story of the house unfolds step by step: for example an archive piece at the entrance, the workshop in the middle and the recent creation at the end of the route. We also manage the flow, with a separate entrance and exit, comfortable passages and seating in front of the films. We place the labels, texts and screens at reading height, close to the pieces they present.

Showing the pieces of a house: display cases, mounts and light

A ring, a watch movement, a bottle or an archive page each call for a different presentation. For each piece, the mount sets the height, the angle and the distance from the eye, and we adjust it with the scenographer. The cases designed for jewellery and watchmaking lock, and the light enters through optical fibres or built-in LEDs, which give off little heat and spare fragile materials. We deal with reflections from the drawing stage, with anti-reflective glass and the angle of the lamps.

We also produce the fragrance and beauty events and the high jewellery events that surround an exhibition, from the private presentation to the opening evening.

An immersive exhibition: projection, sound and interaction

In an immersive exhibition, you surround the visitor with images and sound: projection on the walls and floor, video mapping on a volume, spatial sound, content triggered by their presence. We produce the technical side: choice and position of the projectors, blackout of the room, playback servers, alignment of the mapping, then technical support during the run.

Temporary exhibitions and exhibition installation

You set up a temporary exhibition in a hired venue, a gallery or your boutique, for a few days or a few weeks, and even at an art fair, where our exhibition stand design work takes over. Exhibition installation begins with the display walls and volumes, then come the paint, the electrics and lighting, the placing of the cases and a thorough clean of the venue. The house installs its pieces last, with its teams or its registrar, in a clean and guarded venue, and we then adjust the lighting piece by piece. At the get-out, the pieces leave first, then the crews take everything down and hand the venue back in its original condition.

We prepare the opening evening on the same schedule, with its event scenography and event set design; the whole corporate event production of the exhibition then fits in a single budget.

Preparing the exhibition with us

Share the list of pieces and the venue you have in mind, and we will prepare the feasibility study of the exhibition together.

The stages of exhibition design

  • Programme: the subject, the list of pieces, the expected audience.
  • Site visit and survey of the venue.
  • Sketch: the route and the main moods.
  • Preliminary design: plans, elevations, materials, lighting and budget.
  • Construction drawings and specifications for the workshops.
  • Build, trial assembly and transport.
  • Installation, placing of the pieces and adjustment of the lighting.
  • Opening, technical support, then the get-out.

Depending on the project, we design the exhibition with partner scenographers.

Precious pieces: security, transport and insurance

Jewellery, watchmaking and archive pieces travel in made-to-measure crates, with specialist carriers, and the house generally insures them from departure to return, nail to nail. In the venue, the display cases lock, surveillance runs whether the exhibition is open or closed, and a security plan sets out who can reach the pieces, and when. We build these requirements into the specification from the sketch stage. The transport and security of the pieces remain the responsibility of the house, whose security department handles the CCTV and the safes; we can build the display cases to its specification, and we take care of the sets and furniture, their storage and logistics included, through our network.

A touring exhibition, planned from the first drawing

If the exhibition is to travel from one city to another, we design it in modules that come apart, pack into their crates and go back up in venues of different sizes. The display cases, the lighting and the image displays travel with it; the partitions and finishes adapt to each venue.

Frequently asked questions

What is exhibition design?

Exhibition design shapes the space of an exhibition: the visitor route, the presentation of objects, the display cases, the lighting and the signage. The scenographer translates the subject of the exhibition into space, from the plan to the installation.

What is the difference between museography and exhibition design?

Museography defines the content of the exhibition: the subject, the chosen pieces, the texts and the order of the story. Exhibition design translates this content into space, with the route, the display cases, the lighting and the graphics.

What does an exhibition designer do?

The exhibition designer draws the route, chooses the presentation of each piece and designs the moods with the lighting designer. Their plans then guide the workshops in the build and the production team in the installation.

Can a temporary exhibition be held in a boutique?

Yes, once you have checked the access, the floor loading, the available power and the safety rules of the venue. We then adapt the route and the display cases to the floor area, and we install outside opening hours if the boutique stays open.

How are high jewellery or watchmaking pieces protected on display?

It takes display cases that lock, CCTV for the whole length of the exhibition and light that gives off little heat. The transport and security of the pieces stay with your house, whose security department handles the CCTV and the safes. We can build the cases to your specification, and we choose the lighting to suit the pieces.
